Overview

Pregame Reports:

The summer before the 2025-2026 college basketball season, I approached the athletic director and head coach of SIUE's Men's Basketball team to strategize how I could use my analytical skills to help the team succeed. After talking to head coach Brian Barone and assistant coach Colin Schneider, we were able to come up with a plan for pregame reports to help the coaches plan for their upcoming matchups and identify their opponents' strengths and weaknesses.

The final edition of my program receives the opponent's name as an input, then creates two reports: player analysis report and team analysis report. These reports came a long way from the first iteration, but after receiving feedback from the coaches, athletic director, and other helpful contacts, I was able to improve my designs, analysis, and insights.

Transfer Scraper:

After the 2025-2026 basketball season, I was approached by SIUE's athletic director and assistant coach to help them attack problems they face in the transfer recruiting process. They had one major problem: How do you know if an athlete is entering the portal or not?

The assistant coach showed me his current system which includes a database of players with data on whether or not they have entered the portal. The database works great for division 1, maybe division 2 players, but the difficult part is keeping up to date on their transfer status, and finding available NAIA players. Their only system for solving this problem comes from refreshing X.com.

After meeting with the coach, I developed a solution. Using Python, I wrote a program that scrapes through X.com (using nitter) and looks for an athlete's name, and keywords like "transfer, leaving, level up, D1..." This program is able to save time when searching for available players, making the recruiting process more efficient and effective, which is key for a low-conference team like SIUE.

My experience with the SIUE Men's Basketball team has not only improved my coding skills, but also taught me how to interact with coaching staff to provide actionable data, while refining my ability to iterate based on professional feedback.
